Brake discs
Brake discs are the core components of disc braking systems. They work with brake pads to create friction, manage heat, and bring heavy vehicles to a safe, controlled stop.
The brake disc, also known as a rotor, rotates with the wheel. When the brake is applied, the pads clamp onto the disc, creating friction that slows the vehicle. The heat generated during this process must be dissipated quickly to maintain performance and avoid brake fade — especially critical in heavy-duty vehicles and long downhill applications.
Truck brake discs are made from specially treated cast iron or high-performance composite alloys. Many feature internal ventilation channels or cooling fins to enhance airflow and thermal management. Some designs include wear indicators, sensor holes, or pre-machined slots to accommodate advanced monitoring systems.
Worn, warped, or cracked discs can lead to vibration, noise, uneven pad wear, and loss of braking efficiency. Routine inspection and proper replacement are vital for braking system health and safety.
