Handbrake valves
Parking brake valves enable manual control of the braking system. They regulate air pressure to the spring brake chambers, ensuring the vehicle stays securely parked.
The parking brake valve, also known as the hand control valve, is a key component in the air braking system of commercial vehicles. It allows the driver to manually engage or release the spring brakes by controlling the airflow to and from the spring brake chambers. When activated, the valve either pressurizes the system to release the brakes or vents the air to engage them.
Most parking brake valves are dashboard-mounted as pull or rotary knobs, easily recognizable by color coding — typically yellow or red. Since these valves are operated daily, they must be exceptionally durable and resistant to wear. Internal leaks, contamination, or mechanical fatigue can lead to failure in maintaining parking pressure, which can be dangerous in heavy loads or sloped environments.
A fully functional parking brake valve is critical for keeping the vehicle safely immobilized at standstill. Whether parked on flat ground or a hill, it ensures the spring brakes do their job and hold the vehicle in place. Regular inspections and timely replacements are essential for operational safety.
