Coolant expansion tank
The coolant expansion tank absorbs pressure and volume changes in the cooling system. It keeps the circuit sealed, safe, and temperature-stable during engine operation.
As the engine heats up, the coolant expands. The expansion tank, also known as the overflow reservoir, compensates for this increased volume to maintain stable pressure inside the cooling system. This prevents leaks, hose bursts, or damage to components.
The tank connects to the radiator and coolant lines and is usually made of transparent plastic with level indicators for easy visual inspection. The cap is just as important — it regulates pressure by releasing excess steam or coolant when needed and sealing the system again as it cools.
If the expansion tank cracks or the cap fails, the engine can lose coolant, overheat, or suffer from pressure drops — all of which can lead to costly damage or breakdowns.
