Pistons and cylinder liners

The piston moves up and down inside the cylinder liner, compressing air (or the air/fuel mixture) and receiving the force of combustion. This downward force is transferred via the connecting rod to the crankshaft, generating the engine’s rotary power.

The cylinder liner, also known as the sleeve, provides a hard, smooth surface for the piston to travel within. Combined with piston rings, it ensures a tight seal, reduces friction, and maintains oil control. The precise fit between piston and liner is critical for preserving compression and managing heat transfer.

Pistons are typically made of forged aluminum for strength and heat resistance, while liners are made from hardened cast iron for durability. Wear or scoring can lead to blow-by, oil consumption, reduced power, or even seizure.
