Introduction:

Gearboxes are the heart of every truck, enabling the transfer of power to the wheels. They play a crucial role in determining the vehicle's tractive effort, fuel consumption and overall driving performance. A truck's gearbox is a complex component subject to wear and potential failure. Timely repairs and maintenance are vital to ensure that the gearbox continues to perform optimally.

Functioning of a gearbox:

A gearbox works by changing the gear ratios between the engine and the truck's drive wheels. This allows the driver to choose the right gear for different speeds and driving conditions, resulting in an optimal balance between tractive power and fuel consumption.

Types of gearboxes:

There are different types of gearboxes used in trucks. Manual gearboxes give the driver full control over the shifting process, while automatic gearboxes do the shifting automatically. Automated manual gearboxes combine the best of both worlds.

How often should I change the oil in my gearbox?

The frequency with which the oil in a gearbox should be changed can vary depending on the specific vehicle and type of gearbox. However, it is generally recommended to change the oil in a gearbox on time.

It is also important to note that if you notice abnormal symptoms on the road, such as jerky shifting, noises or leaks, it is advisable to have the gearbox oil checked earlier and possibly replaced. In some cases, a worn oil can be the cause of problems and replacing it can improve the performance of the gearbox.

In short, regular maintenance and following the manufacturer's recommendations are essential to ensure that the oil in your gearbox is replaced on time and that the gearbox continues to function optimally.

What are some common reasons for a gearbox overhaul?

There are several reasons why a gearbox may need an overhaul. Here are some common reasons:

Wear and tear of internal components:   Over time, the internal parts of a gearbox, such as the gears, bearings and synchromeshes, may show wear. This can lead to jerky shifting, difficulty in shifting, reduced performance and abnormal noises such as a pounding sound, rattling noise or buzzing can indicate gearbox problems. An overhaul may be necessary to replace worn parts and restore the smooth functioning of the gearbox.

Switching problems:  For mechanical problems, it is important to check the shift housing, shift cables and other relevant components. For automatic gearboxes with shifting problems, it is advisable to check the power pack or shift cover. These components contain hydraulic valves and electronic sensors that are responsible for ensuring the gearbox shifts correctly.

Clutch problems:  Gearbox overhauls may also be required due to clutch problems, such as a worn clutch plate, a broken pressure plate or problems with the hydraulic or mechanical operation of the clutch. An overhaul may be needed to replace clutch components and restore proper clutch operation. A worn clutch plate can be recognised by a bad smell (burnt smell) or a sliding clutch, where the truck does not accelerate properly even when the engine speed increases.
