Are you preparing for the new tachograph?

If you work in the transport sector, it is crucial to stay up-to-date with tachograph requirements. The Smart Tacho 2 is coming, replacing current models. For most companies, this should happen before the end of 2024. Read more in our blog.

If you are active in the transport sector, you undoubtedly know how essential tachographs are. The next-generation tachograph that will succeed the current generation is the Smart Tacho 2. Check out the timeline below to determine when you need to replace your old tachograph. For most of the transport sector, this will be before the end of 2024.

What innovations does the Smart Tachograph offer?

Automatic GNSS positioning : The Smart Tachograph provides automatic positioning via GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) at departure, arrival and during the journey after every three hours. This accurately records cumulative driving time over a three-hour period.

Remote reading by control authorities : The Smart Tachograph allows control officials to read the tachograph remotely. This allows them to check data quickly and efficiently without having to gain direct physical access to the vehicle.

Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) interface : This tachograph is equipped with a multi-purpose ITS interface. This provides capabilities for advanced communication and data exchange, allowing the vehicle to integrate with intelligent transportation systems for improved performance and efficiency.

How can Sanders Parts support you?

We offer support to authorised installers for the required tachographs. When converting the tachograph, it is essential to replace the kitas4 sensor. Please note that the installation should only be carried out by approved installers.

Smart Tacho 2:

There are 2 types with CANBUS and without CANBUS
Check out this
link which Smart Tacho 2 you need:

  • 1381-7550333013  SMART TACHO 2 DTCO 4.1 24/12V-ADR Z2 WITH CANBUS

  • 1381-7550333014  SMART TACHO 2 DTCO 4.1 24/12V-ADR Z2 WITHOUT CANBUS

Matching parts:

If you have a Smart Tacho Type 1, you do not need any additional parts. However, for older tachos, you will need an additional antenna and antenna cable:

  • A3C1056220021  DSRC antenna for DTCO 4.1

  • 2910002041400  DSRC antenna cable for DTCO 4.1

These extra parts are needed to be able to read the tachograph remotely.

Remote reading of tachograph - What does the legislator say about this?

To facilitate control, the Smart Tachograph should be equipped with a module that allows control officers to read the tachograph remotely via the DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communication) system. This reading can be done either at a fixed location or mobile with a control vehicle.

It is stipulated that by September 2024, control officers in member states must be equipped with remote reading equipment. Until then, each member state can decide on a voluntary basis whether to equip their control officers with it.

Moreover, it has been established that remote reading does not automatically result in fines. The primary purpose of this feature is to detect possible tampering and possible overloading. However, the current use of weigh loops in the road surface will be retained.

Regarding remote reading, the following data can be retrieved:

  • The recent security breach

  • The longest power outage/blackout

  • Sensor errors

  • Errors in motion data

  • Conflicting motion data

  • Driving without a valid card

  • Entering a map while driving

  • Time adjustment data

  • Calibration data, including the last two calibration records

  • The vehicle registration number

  • The speed recorded by the tachograph
